Actually the sync is automatic, you don't have to do anything special. Any changes are immediately uploaded to the RU server provided there's working connectivity.

It's the same as with any other version. You need to either use the vanilla installer or custom-build your own installer and then use the Remote Install tool to upgrade remote hosts. Or do it manually on the Hosts, if need be.

Also, forgot to ask, is v6.0 a free upgrade from v5.6.x?

As per our Upgrade Policy, customers who purchased the software a year before the final release date or later are eligible for free upgrade. Customers who purchased earlier can purchase the upgrade with a discount.

The new version will have a new license key format. So when we make the final release we'll also provide an interface/webpage for customers to replace their old keys with new ones or get a discount coupon.

Hi John,

No, they are mutually exclusive. The Agent is mostly for quick ad hoc support, whereas the Host is a complete app/service that allows you both unattended and attended support.

They share the same program code, that's why they can't run simultaneously. If you want Host to act like Agent, simply enable the Ask User Permission feature.

Hello Bobby,

Installed the Viewer today, the Icon for Viewer is pinned to my Task-bar, it's just a white icon... no biggie there.

Some Windows idiosyncrasy, no doubt  :) Perhaps, restarting the PC will help.

Didnt see any real good tools for the Viewer to use though...

The focus of this update was making address book management easier. But we'll keep adding new features to both Remote Utilities and RU Server.

kinda of a let down as for PC Information containing to Network Info/PC Security Status...ect which im sure will be in a later version..

This feature is on our roadmap for one of the minor 6.x updates.

I am in a thought process of installing GMS 6.0 and upgrading a Host or 2 to test this baby out all the way..but it is important to keep a remote connection alive to them PC's... dont want a bug.. :

Viewer 6.0 can connect to older Hosts. So you don't have to update all your Hosts all at once. Just update the Viewer and a couple of Hosts.

Also, you don't have to use RU Server (GMS) for all your connections. You can use it exclusively for the Hosts you are testing beta on. And of course, use it for testing the sync functionality.

A word of warning: Before you upgrade your Viewer, run Tools -> Export connections command in the Viewer to save your address book file somewhere as a backup. This way you'll be absolutely sure that whatever happens your address book is safe and you can always get back to it.

EDITED: Trying to modify a MSI package but it gives me a error saying that it is not a actual MSI package. (downloaded version 5.6 and version 6.0 of the Host from website) I am running the Beta Viewer.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for the questions.

-Am I right in assuming that the new shared Address Book functionality is only available via running our own GMS and will not be available via your RUT hosted servers?

Yes, you are right. We are just stepping into this territory, and online sync is a far more complicated issue than a local one. Therefore we decided to start small.  

-Is there any functionality to 'merge' address books? Or at least be able to move a PC entry fr om one address book to another? (Mark and 'Send To' another address book or drag and drop between books) We have several address books totaling 100's of PC entries and need to create a 'common' address book.

You can move folders and records from one address book to another in Viewer 6.0, regardless of whether it's a local or synced address book. Simply drag a folder or record from one book and drop it in the other one.

-We requested a (much needed) free-form text field to add a note to each PC's address book entry. Is this available in 6.x? If not, can you add it? This allows us the ability to consolidate info about the PC and user into one location, i.e., RUT!

We certainly have this suggestion on our roadmap but haven't implemented it yet. We'll see if we can add it to the final 6.0 release. Thank you for the reminder.

-One of our biggest issues faced is getting our RUT MSI installed via RDP. Has this been fixed in 6?

Hmm, could you please remind the details? What specifically went wrong?

-A few of our customers servers (SBS2011 seems to be the commonality) have an issue with the version of MSXML and their log files growing into Gb size with many thousands of MSXML messages. Has this been fixed?

Test is needed. You could try to install the new Host on a couple of those servers and see if the issue is still present.

(Independent of the MSXML issue) Is there a way we can lim it the connection log size on the host (or turn it off) to ensure it never grows too large?

Currently, you cannot limit the log size but you can turn it off. See Settings for Host -> Options -> Logging tab.

-We requested improvements to the MSI installer email message generated at install, specifically changing the 'Username: SYSTEM' to correctly reflect the current user logged into the PC. Is this in version 6?

I'll check it out and get back to you soon.

-Finally(!), looking forward, what facilities are available to upgrade our existing v5.x custom MSI installed hosts to v6? Also, can we use the v6 viewer with v5.x hosts?

I'm afraid you will have to build your custom MSI from scratch :) It's an entirely new version and code.

Address book sync via RU Server

Let me elaborate more on this feature so that you understand it better.

Let's say we have three Viewers and a RU-Server and we want to share/sync a specific address book among all three Viewers. Now, after you created your address book in one of the Viewers and allowed online sync (in address book settings in the Viewer and on the RU Server) your address book gets uploaded to the RU Server immediately.

After that you need to "plug in" the other two Viewers to the sync process by simply creating an empty address book on them and allowing online sync in the address book settings. When you are done, the other two Viewers download the address book from the RU Server.

Now you have four address book copies (xml files) - on each of the three Viewers and on the RU Server. Whenever a new record or any other alteration occurs in one of the Viewers, all other copies get immediately updated using RU Server as an intermediary. Provided that you have working network connection, all address books will be in sync.

Automatic daily backups of address books

Starting version 6.0 the Viewer can automatically back up your address books on a daily basis. By default, backups are stored in the Viewer installation folder, but you can specify a different folder.

 5 Disable screensaver and wallpaper


You can disable the wallpaper in connection Properties -> Additional properties -> Remove wallpaper. As for a running screensaver, it gets switched off once you connect to the remote PC in the Full Control mode and do some action, like a mouse click.

Remote install with the same ID

Hi Chris,

There are couple of reasons why a new ID is generated:

1. You check "Generate new ID and send via email" option on step 3 of MSI configuration process. Don't do that if you don't want a new ID generated.

2. You leave "Keep remote Host's INternet ID settings" check box empty on Step 4. You should check that checkbox if you want to keep the ID of the Host you are upgrading.

3. Finally, on the last step when Host settings window appears at the end of the configuration process, do NOT generate the ID in the "Internet ID connection settings". Otherwise, if you do, it'll generate a fixed ID value that will be the same for each installation you use that output installer file for.
