Various small how-to questions
Thank you for the kind words. Yes, we receive few support tickets and forum posts relative to our user base, but that has always been our primary strategy. We are planning to further improve and update our documentation and also provide some fresh video tutorials soon.It speaks well of the Remote Utilities software and documentation (beautifully done) that there is so little activity in the forum of such a widely used product. (Potential customers: do yourself and your organization a big favor and get this software.)
It would be useful to be able to modify the title of a forum posting after the post has been submitted.
This can be done by an administrator. So if you need to update the title, just send me a message through the forum (via PM) and I'll do that.
That makes sense. Anyway, the Host settings window will be significantly revamped soon. When we'll be making this change, we'll keep in mind this suggestion.Under Host Setting > Security > Users and access control, I would change "User name" to "Remote utilities user name" to quickly distinguish it from the Windows user name.
Yes, for a connection mode to be allowed for a specific RU user it should also be allowed in global settings on the Mode tab. In other words, the Modes tab serves as a global "switch" to quickly block any undesirable permissions for all users.4. Under point 5 of number 3 above regarding "Permissions for individual users can be overridden by global permissions set on the Modes tab."
I think this is incorrect. When a mode is disabled on the "User Access - RUT Security" window and enabled on the Security > Advanced > Modes tab, the statement states that the mode is enabled for the user when in fact it is disabled. The Modes tab setting (enabled) does NOT override the "User Access - RUT Security" setting (disabled).
It seems a connection mode is enabled for a particular user only if is enabled both on the Modes tab and on the user's "User Access - RUT Security" window.
Perhaps, we need to rephrase the documentation quote above then.
Internet ID - Connection issue
Thank you for your message.
Have you upgraded both Viewer and Host to version 6.6.0.7?

So, I really, really like the way it works now.
Various small how-to questions
As a software user myself I know that even a small issue can be annoying when the related feature is used on a daily basis. So no problem with your letting us know your concerns. The more, the merrier :)
But if you'll allow me one more comment, can you simply enable changing connection modes by clicking a connection mode icon on the ribbon without affecting the current behavior?
This won't work, unfortunately. I.e. a click on a connection button on the ribbon should only do one action. But we'll consider if we can add an option to Viewer settings which would allow to switch from one behavior/system to the other.
Yes, some articles in the documentation still require updating. We will do our best to finish with that soon.(Don't forget to update your documentation that I cited earlier to reflect the change disabling the behavior we are discussing.)
Thanks!
Various small how-to questions
The logging on and off feature, although may seem superfluous at first glance, actually serves its own purposes. First, it allows to see remote screen previews on the thumbnails. Also, it is when you are logged in on the remote computer that you can remotely update the Hosts. Finally, it works as a "preliminary connection" - it lets you connect to a remote PC to check what's going on there before you distract the remote user from their work. For example, you may log in, take a quick look at the remote screen preview, see that the remote user is working and send them a quick message.I'm also not sure the value of having separate login and logout concepts warrants the added conceptual complexity, but that's for another time.
I agree that for this use case the old system was faster. There are use cases where a user goes fr om one connection icon to the next using the same connection mode each time. Mine is the other high level use case wh ere the user goes from one connection mode to the next while using the same connection.
To sum it up, this is a classic situation when there are two conflicting use cases, so the only way to resolve this would be to simply let the user decide. I will add a suggestion to our wishlist - perhaps we could implement an option that would allow users to set the desired behavior of the ribbon.
Various small how-to questions
I understand what you mean. Previously (an update or two back) the behavior of the ribbon toolbar in the Viewer window was different. The buttons there were used to launch a connection mode for a selected connection right away. This was some sort of a duplication of what could be achieved by right-clicking on the connection icon and selecting the target mode from the menu.
So we decided to change the ribbon behavior so that it would offer an alternative way to run a connection mode. If a user has a connection mode they use most often, they can simply select this mode on the ribbon and then use a double-click on a connection to launch it in that mode.
Hope that helps.
Is it possilbe to start a host from a full shutdown over the Internet with WOL
I'm glad to see that you managed to figure out the issue. And all the credit should go to Benny for providing such a detailed and to-the-point answer.
As for the WoL in Remote Utilities, we'll definitely be improving it in the future. We have some suggestions on our wish list, namely to use one Host to wake other computers on the same LAN.
What is the address/location of the RU public server for latency testing?
I created a ticket. Thanks.

We need to check this issue closer. May I move this forum thread into tickets, because we might need some log information from you etc?

Thank you for your message.
What country are you in? Specifically, where the Viewer and Host PCs are located?
