I did not have to delete any files etc. The File transfer window opened without issues today. However even using the IP address of the remote computer the file transfer of this 318MB file is taking the same amount of time as with the internet-id. Both of these computers are connected to the same network switch. Transfer speed using IP connection is 733 KB/sec

I just tried it again and I'm getting 8.11 MB per second.
One other quick question. Are you using the same default listening port on both of your computers host? I don't think it matters with direct connection, but it does enter into the equation at some point.

Found the issue. Frigging network cable on the remote system. Once I swapped it out I got transfer of that file down to 37 seconds.  Used the Open speedtest to show the issue.

Thanks again Benny :)

Thanks, that rules out the two most common causes. Both sides being on 7.8.4.0 and a Direct connection over the LAN is the right setup.

The Host showing "File transfer active" means the session is being set up. The window going away is on the Viewer side, and the usual fix for that is resetting the Viewer configuration file:

1. Exit the Viewer completely via File -> Exit.
2. Delete

config_4.xml
from
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Remote Utilities Files\
(AppData is hidden by default, so turn on hidden items in Explorer first).
3. Start the Viewer again.

Your address book isn't affected, but you'll need to register the Viewer with your license key again afterwards.

If it still closes, add the Viewer and Host installation folders to the exclusion list of any antivirus on both machines, including Windows' own protection. Antivirus interfering with a file in flight is a known cause of File Transfer failing partway.

If neither helps, please send us the Viewer log and the Host log covering a failed attempt to support@, and we'll look into it.

I have a free license key in my email account from 7 years but I have no idea if that is the same key as I am using currently. Would that cause an issue if I use a different free key?

I have evaluated other remote access software all subscription based and using the same test file which is an exe to install MS power toys 316MB.
Two competitors to RemoteUtilities were able to transfer the same exe file over the LAN here in under 5 minutes or less.

Could you please elaborate on your RU settings?

1. Are both Viewer and Host upd ated to the same version, 7.8.4.0?

2. Are you using a Direct connection? An Internet-ID connection can auto-detect a LAN route and switch to it, but sometimes it can't, especially if the Host's listening port isn't open on the remote computer. Make sure you use a Direct connection, i.e. specify the local IP address in the connection properties for that specific connection.

Viewer 7.8.4.0 and Host 7.8.4.0 (79840). Using a Inernet-ID connection.

I se t it to IP connection on the LAN connected fine. Tried to do a file transfer. Clicked on COPY in the file transfer window and the window closed. I have tried multiple time to bring up the file transfer window and it fails to open yet the Active Connections bug in the lower right corner of the remote computer shows File transfer active. I have tried restarting the host and even rebooting the host and the result is always the same. The File Transfer Window fails to opn up on the viewer side.

I don't know then. I just transferred the Power Toys install .exe file from my laptop to my desktop using RU File Transfer, and it was something like 30 - 40 seconds. I'm about out of ideas for your case. Something is mis-configured for sure.

Was that a 318MB file for powertoys installer? That is the size of the file I use to test with.

Just to let everyone in this thread know I am a free user of Remote Utilities but am evaluating it for a replacement for my existing remote software come year end for my business clients I support. I have evaluated other remote access software all subscription based and using the same test file which is an exe to install  MS power toys 316MB.

Two competitors to RemoteUtilities were able to transfer the same exe file over the LAN here in under 5 minutes or less.

I had a similar experience myself. The fix for me was to open the properties of "C:\Program Files (x86)\Remote Utilities - Viewer\rutview.exe", and under the compatibility tab, make sure to check the box, "Run this program as an administrator. Fixed it for me. YMMV.

Thanks for the suggestion but after doing that still took over 7 mins to transfer the test file to the remote computer.

What is more maddening is that if you happen to install an old version of Remote Utilities Host for whatever reason the viewer will never connect to the Host and the Host will never update to the more current version. I spent about an hour trying to figure out what was the issue and blamed it on Windows updates being installed when in fact it was a grossly outdated Host installer.

Thanks anyways for the suggestion.

I installed Host on a test computer here. I set up a password under Security  for the host system. I then go to the viewer computer entered the Internet ID and tried to connect. The viewer fails to connect almost immediately. Both are Windows11 Pro systems. Host is 6.6.0.7 vewer is 7.8.4

Agent + Windows safe mode beware?

We are planning to add a "Convert to Host" option to Agent in an upcoming release. The "Run after reboot" option was originally introduced as a temporary workaround, but it was never an ideal replacement. For reboot operations, the remote computer should be running a full-fledged service that starts automatically after a restart, whether in normal or Safe Mode. That's exactly what Host is designed for.

That is good because Run After Reboot does not work on Agent when you tell the remote system to reboot into safe mode with networking via Power Menu. I just confirmed it. The system is left into permanent safe mode until u cancelled it.
