Windows Server STD 2025 - blocked RUT after AD / DC promotion

Links used in this discussion
This is still an issue. I have a Windows server 2025 std that was shipped as a workgroup with Remote Utilities installed. Once on site I domain joined the server then followed standard practice to add AD role, restart and then promote as a DC. Once that happened I lost access with Remote Utilities, and it stopped Windows Defender from starting.  I went through a lot of diagnostics using AI trying to resolve, and then when I come here I find the topic below.  I removed the remote utilities service, restarted the server and Defender is back functional, at which I could uninstall the remote utilities host. I then went through the entire process as described below, demoting, removing AD, restarting, rejoining AD, promoting as DC and it Defender was back functioning. I had deleted the Remote Utilities folders under x86 and program data earlier, so it should have been clean.  Once I reinstalled RUT using a one click installer that I have built and use for others it immediately stops Defender and after the server is restarted remote utilities shows "starting" under services but never loads.  This is using 7.7.3.0.  Is there any resolution?

Hi Keith,

Thank you for your message.

Would it be possible for you to test this out once again and see if the same issue occurs when using our vanilla installer available on our website?

Looking forward to your reply.
Thank you for the reply. I will not be able to do it on this particular server because it is already been put in a production.

I can try installing the vanilla installer now to see if it works without killing the defender service. When it happens it causes a lot of problems, you have to log back in in safe mode to be able to kill the service. Just so that you can try to get it installed because it keeps spawning installer loops. So I can't do it during the day when I have active users on the server.

I do have another server with basically the same configuration that I can attempt with the vanilla installer and then see if it sticks after I domain join and promote it. I will be working on it in the next few days and we'll report back.
Nope. Hosed me. Cannot proceed, having to boot server to safe mode with networking to uninstall. Basically I cannot run RU on Server 2025 STD, whether installed from vanilla website host installer or my one click installer

Hi Keith,

Thank you for the follow up.

I’m going to be forwarding this issue to our development department to see if we’re able to reproduce it in our environment.
In the meantime, could you please try adding the Host installation folder to the Defender’s exception list as described here and see if this might help to resolve the issue.

Let us know if this helps.
It already was an exception.

Note; once this occurred it has hosed my server and I have spent at least 6 hours trying to get it resolved, the virus definitions now show 0.0.0.0 and there is no resolution I have found searching with Claude, CoPilot, Gemini and Perplexity, other than the suggestion to reinstall Server, which would cost me another 10-12 hours, easily.  To say I am disappointed is being very nice.  I have been a long time user for Remote Utilities and have recommended it to many others, but at this point I am just at a loss.
Hi Keith,

Thank you for elaborating on that and apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.
I’m forwarding the issue to our developers to see if we can reproduce it and figure out some kind of a quick fix or a workaround for it.

I’ll get back to you with an update on this shortly.
