Got it... solved but "cheated"
config_4.xml opened in editor and it was empty
I have Viewer on two machines... copied xml from "good" machine to the "bad" one
Problem solved.
Your hint of opening the xml in an Editor was the big clue

While restoring "connections_4.xml" did solve all my problems... there still hangs the issue of why
recovering my license "key1.txt" did not work... unable to post "key1.txt" to the License Storage routine.
Drag & Drop, Copy & Paste or CTRL+N did not work
While I have all my connections back the Viewer is still in "Trial Mode... 31 days left"
How can I reset to my valid license (Key1.txt) as before ??

thanks, got my address book back.
A couple notes on the tutorial:
After finding the folder to Restore)YYYY-MM-DD_connections_4_general.zip, unzipping to the work folder
The work folder now has to folder without the zip extension.
You have to drill down two levels to get to the needed file connections_4.xml
Dumb me was trying to post the whole folder--- mind fog when you are 82 !!
When opening Viewer, you need to click on Menu item Manage and not Tools

Not sure why but Viewer 6.10 went blank... no connections.
Went to RemoteUtilities web and Older Downloads, re-installed Viewer
Recovered my License, got the zipped file, extracted "Key1.txt" to a folder.

Take a look in
C:\Users\[Your_username]\AppData\Roaming\Remote Utilities Files\ folder.
In my folder there are all the install packages for Viewer for my system

Installed Viewer v7 by error - went back to v6..NO passwords work

Time for a Daily Chuckle
Followed the procedure... end result no help
Uninstalled Viewer v6, Edited the Registry for anything about the Viewer. Rebooted
Loaded Viewer v6, complete new install
On first attempt to create a New Connection.... 'key has expired... etc"
Got new key.. on dropping key into Key Storage.... Drag & Drop would not work !!
about 2am got out the previous week disk image backup and recovered my whole system.
NOW all is fine
Years with RU, seems that they should have sent a warning about v7.
Many small users like me see a new update and apply it
Yes I am a free user with only 7 sites
Having been around computers since the days when our computer had 300 tons on A/C to
keep the vacuum tube cool.... I have a right to vent

Original Config Viewer v6 with 4 Hosts on v6... all worked fine for years.
Made a mistake and installed Viewer v7 and quickly found out that license fees are needed.
Uninstalled Viewer v7 and Reinstalled Viewer v6, Rebooted
ran Viewer to a Host, asked for password, entered password on file.. Wrong Password msg.
Strange that password has been in use for years.. tried a couple of more time... no success.
Went to that Host, close by, changed password, Restarted Host

On the screen where you enter the Remote ID to connect, there is the
grey box with three dots ... which I assume will pull up an "address book"
of previously entered ID's
so how do I create this book?
Had one where I then clicked on the "Info" icon and was able to edit
the entry for a named remote plus the ID. On entering a new ID..
this one went away.

Sorry for the delayed response... subject computer was not local.
Had another/different problem with Avast, so canned it, installed Bitdefender.
"Host" has been solid for three days.
