Internet ID – Remote access made easier
What is an Internet ID?
An Internet ID is a feature/technology that allows firewalls and NAT services to be bypassed when connecting to a remote PC. It is not necessary to know the IP or DNS address of the remote PC; all that is needed is its Internet ID – a unique identification number generated by Remote Utilities. No special network configuration is necessary.
Helpdesk companies benefit from the “Internet ID” feature the most. It is vital for such companies to be able to provide remote assistance to all their clients no matter what their level of computer literacy or how their network is configured.
How does it work?
The Internet ID technology uses an intermediary (mediation) server between the RUT-Viewer and RUT-Server. When using the Internet ID you can choose either:
- Our company's mediation server located in the Internet (the default option);
- Gateway Mediation Server (GMS) - a self-hosted server located on your premises.
Both the RUT-Viewer and RUT-Server first connect to the chosen mediation server, which links them together and establishes the connection.
The whole process is very much like how instant messaging services, such as Skype or ICQ, work.
Why you need an Internet ID
Previously, you had to configure routers, other network devices, set up port forwarding (port mapping), and perform other manipulations to access a remote PC located behind a firewall or NAT. It was very difficult for the average user even to understand what was necessary to make the connection work, much less to perform all those operations . With the Internet ID feature, connecting to a remote PC is now simple and straightforward.
